Why?

Energy is the lifeblood of our economies, a critical infrastructure that affects all of our lives in virtually every activity we do. But for all of its great achievements our industrial energy architecture is not working as it could. Today 80% of the energy used by people around the world originates in fossil fuels that create multiple forms of environmental degradation while as a finite resource it will not scale to meet the demands of a growing global economy. A centralized narrow focus on fossil fuels creates scarcity and vulnerabilities, in a world of potential abundance, the question is how can the deep structure of our energy systems evolve to meet new demands and harness the power of today’s distributed technologies.

New Approach

Today huge potential lies in the advent of distributed energy technology but this is simply changing in parts when what is needed is systems-level innovation, a change in the very structure of our energy systems, moving away from the centralized monopolistic model of the past towards a decentralized peer-to-peer smart grid. The next-generation energy grid will be firstly an information network, that aggregates and coordinates the exchange between prosumers. Today’s linear model will evolve into a much more dynamic ecosystem with many different providers that are able to harness a greater spectrum of energy sources and coordinate them more effectively.
